Experience the Black Hills like never before with a ride on the 1880 Train. This historic steam engine has been lovingly restored to its original condition and is ready to take passengers on a journey through the beautiful Black Hills of South Dakota. The train cars are filled with the fresh air and stunning views of the pine tree covered hills. Enjoy a unique experience from days gone by as you travel in style on this classic train between Keystone and Hill City.

The ride is a 2 1/2 hour roundtrip between the two historic towns and you can board at either depot. On our excursion, we departed from Keystone and after disembarking in Hill City, we wandered through the many shops, historical sites, and found a very nice spot for lunch. Be sure to make arrangements when you purchase your tickets to allow time for exploring the destination town before having to catch the train back to your starting point.

The train cars are beautifully restored and as you chug through the hills and hear the steam whistle, it doesn’t take much effort to imagine yourself back in the late 1800’s and thinking about how this mode of travel was the luxury of the day. The host on the train offers a few historical tidbits as you pass old mining structures and life during the train’s heyday. You may have a chance to see some of the wildlife that call the hills their home, but even if you don’t, enjoy the ride!
